«Śukasaptati»

Second Tale

Salutations to Ganesha, Lord of the host of angels, remover of obstacles!

«I fearlessly satisfied my love for other men, but you did so with apprehension. She, however, did not do so at all. Therefore, being so chaste, she retained the memory only of her race, not of pleasure, and was born a bitch. But you, due to the obstacles to copulation, retained no memory of your former lineage.

I, however, since I placed no restrictions on lustful copulation, retained an unimpeded memory of my previous birth. Therefore, moved by compassion, upon seeing this bitch and you, I have come to tell you everything. Therefore, you must give to all who passionately beg you. He who gives becomes a receptacle for all blessings. It is said:

«Those who beg for alms do not ask, but, going from house to house, say: ‘Those who ask must always give. The fate of those who do not give will be like ours.'»

Then Shashi-prabha, weeping, threw herself on Yasho-devi’s neck, saying, «My dear, introduce me to another man!»

And Yasho-devi, having achieved her goal, brought her to her home with her husband’s consent and introduced her to her son. This Raja-shekhara, Shashi-prabha’s husband, satisfied with the offerings and courtesies, considered her his wife’s friend and did not interfere.

Thus, O mistress, having deceived the prince and princess, the all-wise Yasho-devi accomplished her task.

If you have as much intelligence, then go, beautiful-browed one, to another. And if not, then go to sleep, large-eyed one, and do not expose yourself to ridicule.

After hearing this story from the parrot, Prabhavati fell asleep.

This is the second story
from the book «Shuka-saptati.»
