After the parrot told this, Madana-vinoda, bidding farewell to his wife and bowing to his parents, boarded a ship with their permission and departed abroad.

His wife then remained in grief for several days. However, urged on by her wayward, promiscuous friends, she soon desired to meet another man. They admonished her with proverbial words:

«A man is considered a father or relative as long as he lives. But as soon as his death is learned, tender affection instantly vanishes.

Therefore, you, left without a husband, must relish the pleasures of your fleeting youth in the embrace of another man.»

And so, when, following their advice, she donned seductive attire and jewelry and prepared to meet another man named Guna-candra, the Month of Virtues, the crow said:

«Don’t go,» and began to admonish her to stay home.

As she was about to twist off its head, it fluttered and flew away. She paused for a moment and silently remembered her guardian star. Then she quickly grabbed the betel nut, and as she headed for the exit, the parrot spoke:

«Good luck!» and asked, «Where are you going?»

Prabhavati, taking the parrot’s words as a good omen, smiled and replied:

«O illustrious lord of parrots, I am going to taste another man’s pleasures.»

The parrot agreed:

«Yes, it is a good thing, but it is dangerous, and even frowned upon by married women. However, go ahead, if you have enough intelligence to handle unexpected difficulties. If not, you will find yourself in great trouble.» For:

Evildoers always seek advantage in adversity, like that bawd who fasted for months during the incident with the merchant’s son, who was grabbed by the hair.

Then she, along with her friends, the man-loving ones, became confused and began to respectfully question the parrot:

«What are you saying, parrot?»

He replied:
