«Inappropriate speech, singing songs when one has no voice, making love to someone who says, ‘No, don’t,’—these are the three great sorrows.

One day, Visha Kanya said to her husband:

«It’s been a long time since I left my father’s house. Therefore, I will go there, and I will definitely go with you, no other way.»

The husband found a carriage and set off with his wife. As they rode, they encountered a young, eloquent, charming, and courageous Brahmin named Vishnu, whose face resembled the full moon. He and Visha Kanya fell in love with each other.

It is said:

«Love arises first from the gaze and other senses, then spiritual union from the play of the imagination, then insomnia, emaciation, oblivion of other bodily needs, sensual indifference, loss of shame, madness, fainting, death—these ten states people experience in this world.

With these ten flower arrows, Madana, the Honeymoon of Spring, conquers the season of love, like the best of all archers.»

A traveler named Vishnu gives each husband and wife a rolled betel leaf. The village priest, feeling trust in him, dismounted from his cart and lifted the traveler onto it, fearing to disturb his communication with Vishakanya. And as the husband rounded a grove, Vishnu took possession of the seductress and enjoyed her. She told him her name, her clan, and her family. When the husband approached and wanted to climb onto the cart, the traveler stopped him, saying, «You are a thief.» Vishnu, having captured his wife, began to insult him.

They began to pull each other’s hair. Govinda was defeated by Vishnu, who was aided by Visha Kanya. Having taken the woman, Vishnu rode home.

Govinda followed behind, came to a village by the road, and raised a ruckus: «This thief has captured my wife. Free her. O people, protect me!»
