Parrot:
«Do not go without showing me respect. For good instruction for good should be heard even from a child.»

Madam, in ancient times, a brahmin disrespected the words of the elders and fell into trouble when he married the wicked maiden, Visha-kanya.

Prabhavati asked:
«How so? Tell me!» Parrot:
«There is a place where the brahmins live, called Soma-prabha, the Splendor of the Moon. There lived a certain learned teacher there, a teacher who observed the ordinances of the realm, named Soma-sharma, the Moon-Sharan.» His daughter, gifted with beauty and distinguished by her nobility, became known as Vishakanya, meaning «Poison Maiden,» in memory of the «poison» drunk by Shiva, whose brow is adorned by the Moon, which arose from the abyss of nothingness after the destruction of the universe by the «poison» of a solar eclipse. Out of fear, no one would marry her.

Then Soma Sharma, in search of a groom, set out on a journey through the world and came to a Brahmin village called Jana Sthana, the Crowded Camp. There lived a dull and impoverished Brahmin named Govinda, the «Shepherd of the Celestial Flock,» named after Krishna. To him the daughter was given. Ignoring the dissuasions of his friends, he took as his wife this Vishakanya, as charming as Mohini and endowed with all the virtues of outer beauty. She was wise, while Govinda was foolish and immature, so she regretted her wasted beauty, charm, and youth.

«When women have foolish husbands, when mature women have incompetent lovers, when virtuous and generous people have little money and power—this causes suffering.»

«Departure in the rain, poverty in the days of youth, separation at first love—these are the three great sorrows.»
